Fanfare

This was my first melody for the Norwegian folkrock band Folque. It was recorded in the large Talent Studio during a couple of hours in 1981 and appeared on the album "Landet Ditt" later that year.

I had borrowed an Minimoog from the sami keyboardist Halvdan Nedrejord that summer and was amazed of how you could create new sounds from scratch. So I gave in to the synth wave and bought a new Korg MS-20. It looked like an old telepohne switchboard, and even if you had written the settings on a paper it could take minutes to get the correct sound. No presets or memory in those days...

While the rest of the band were on holiday in the Greek islands I sat by the switchboard and a 4-track recorder to make a demo for the band, and when they came home they decided it was going to be on the album. In the studio we had more real instruments, like a Hammond B-3 and a Brødrene Knag harpsichord. And of course Morten's accoustic gitar, plus the rest of the band coming in during the last minute of the song. I've avoided this recording for years because of the chemical sound of the synth brass, but now it sounds kind of cute - as the analog synth has become an antiquity already... I'll try and make a live version with live brass one day though.

Briskeby Records later released a collector's progrock album ("Killer Orange" something...) which contained this tune.

  • Violin, harpsichord, Hammond B-3, Korg MS-20: Øyvind Rauset
  • Ac. guitar: Morten Bing.
  • Bass: Roald Thomesen
  • El. guitar: Lars Helljesen
  • Drums: Pål Søvik

Sound engineer: Jan Egil Thoreby
